TECHNOLOGY IS RADICALLY TRANSFORMING OUR RESPONSE TO ECOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN. ITS IMPACT IS NOT NEUTRAL, ITS FUTURE IS STILL BEING SHAPED.

WE’RE REDEFINING WHO IS DOING THE SHAPING AND HOW.

Who We Are

ASASE INNOVATION STUDIO is an independent, interdisciplinary research lab and consultancy transforming practice and perspectives at the intersection of ecology, technology and environmental justice.

We help academic institutions, environmental non-profits, nature tech companies, and the cultural sector bridge the gap between theory and practice to ensure that nature technologies work for both people and planet.

From drones that plant trees from the air, acoustic sensors that listen to the earth’s songs, and satellites that detect deforestation, technology is radically transforming our response to ecological breakdown.

Powered by rapidly advancing AI technologies, this growing network of tools and sensors – The Internet of Trees – is collecting immense volumes of data above and within essential ecosystems around the world.

But while these technologies promise to revolutionise how we conserve and restore nature, it is important to acknowledge that their impact is neither wholly positive or neutral. Whilst not always intentional or made visible, these technologies often reproduce uneven power structures embedded in Western conservation and technology development.

From camera traps being used for surveillance, ecoacoustic sensors listening in on communities, and satellite data fuelling the booming carbon credit market built on millions of hectares of land grabs across the Global South, if we really do need to sense nature to save it the question becomes, who is doing the sensing and how?

Why We Exist

JOYCELYN LONGDON

FOUNDER/DIRECTOR

Dr Joycelyn Longdon is an award-winning researcher, designer, writer and communicator. She received her PhD in the Justice-oriented Participatory Design of Conservation Technologies, from the University of Cambridge.

Joycelyn has advised leading environmental and technology organisations on biodiversity AI and environmental justice, such as Atlassian, Friends of the Earth, Nasdaq, Greenpeace, and the Environmental Funders Network and has been invited to contribute to policy roundtables on AI and nature data including the Royal Society’s Science and AI roundtable on the role of AI in climate science.

As a leading public scholar and storyteller, her work has reached global audiences including through her TEDx Talk, her social media platforms, interviews and features in national and international media, and her first book, Natural Connection, which was published by Penguin Vintage in the UK in 2025 and Princeton University Press in the US in 2026.

Joycelyn is a dedicated board member and trustee for a range of conservation organisations including the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, Action for Conservation, and The Earth Percent Sounds Right Conservation Fund.

LET’S SHAPE THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY AT THE INTERSECTION OF ECOLOGY AND JUSTICE TOGETHER.

We collaborate with a small number of institutions, organisations and businesses ready to imagine and implement genuinely transformed practices, narratives and experiences. Whether you have a project already in mind, are interested in signing up for our pilot offerings, or want to explore the potential of co-creating something new, we’d love to hear from you.
