TECHNOLOGY IS RADICALLY TRANSFORMING OUR RESPONSE TO ECOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN. ITS IMPACT IS NOT NEUTRAL, ITS FUTURE IS STILL BEING SHAPED.

THE QUESTION IS, WHO IS DOING THE SHAPING?

WHO WE ARE

ASASE INNOVATION STUDIO is an independent, interdisciplinary research lab and consultancy working at the intersection of ecology, technology and environmental justice.

We work with academic institutions, NGOs, the cultural sector and industry to investigate the systems shaping nature technology, and design alternative approaches rooted in justice.

WHY WE EXIST

Nature technologies are revolutionising the way we monitor and protect essential ecosystems, yet their design and deployment can embed and perpetuate systems of oppression. Despite growing discussion of these risks, there exists a gap between awareness and transformed practice.

We bridge this gap by making visible the justice implications of nature technology, translating insights into concrete frameworks, tools and methods, and building capacity across research, practice and culture.

HOW WE WORK

WE WORK ACROSS TWO DISTINCT YET INTERCONNECTED MODES:

CRITICAL INQUIRY

Rigorous interdisciplinary research that explores urgent questions, uncovers injustices, generates new knowledge, and translates insights to inform decision-making.

JUSTICE-LED DESIGN

Developing tools, frameworks, and methods to address injustices, facilitate pluralistic participation, and remake technology design and deployment practices.

MEET OUR FOUNDER

AWARD WINNING RESEARCHER, DESIGNER AND STORYTELLER BRIDGING THE WORLDS OF ECOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE.

Joycelyn received her doctorate in The Justice-led Participatory Design of Conservation Technology from the University of Cambridge in 2026. Working with a marginalised forest community in Ghana, her research investigated the sociotechnical implications and design opportunities that emerge from participatory ecoacoustic research with marginalised communities, and developed methods for the justice-oriented design and deployment of conservation technologies.

As a storyteller, consultant and public educator, Joycelyn’s work spans published books, essays, TV, film and documentary, speaking, strategy and advisory. Previous clients include leading institutions, such as The Design Council, The Design Museum, Nasdaq, Meta, The Barbican, The Wellcome Collection, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, The Environmental Funders Network, and The Serpentine, amongst others. Joycelyn is a trusted board member, trustee and ambassador for a range of organisations, including Action For Conservation, the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, ZeroHour’s Climate and Nature Bill, and Earth/Percent.

LET’S SHAPE THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY AT THE INTERSECTION OF ECOLOGY AND JUSTICE TOGETHER.

We collaborate with a small number of institutions, organisations and businesses ready to imagine and implement genuinely transformed practices. Whether you have a project already in mind, or want to explore the potential of co-creating something new, we’d love to hear from you.
